Ann-Sofi Sundin, as her name was then, has been in deep water ever since she was 4 years old. Then at 16, Ann- Sofi was already a veteran and a winner for her club SKK in Stockholm, Sweden and the swim team leader of her high school. The desire to swim the English Channel was always in the back of her mind because she had been groomed for this by the legendary Swedish long distance swimmer and channel crosser Sally Bauer.
However, another love came between her and the channel, an American scientist, Henry Truby. They married, had 3 daughters in Sweden, moved to the United States and had 3 sons.
Of course Ann-Sofi couldn't stay out of the water. She didn't just teach her 6 children to swim but gave lessons to neighborhood kids and girl scouts and more. Then she started going to people's homes giving private lessons.
Eventually she began giving small group classes from her home pool and Ann's Swimming School Inc., was born and has been growing ever since.
All of her children have been involved with the swim school at one time or another, but her daughter Susie Truby has been with her almost from the start and has owned the school now for very many years.
Today the school at 7050 Sunset Drive employs at least 12 or more teachers and assistants. Over 100 children come in every day for lessons. There are up to 10 classes a day in the summer and in the fall the school offers maintenance classes a few times a week.
"We wish we could accommodate even more children" says Susie Truby. There is a tremendous demand for the classes. Parents call months in advance to reserve a spot for the peak summer months and classes fill up quickly. The school has never advertised, it has all been by word of mouth. Which in it self says a lot about the school.
Ann- Sofi is supposed to be retired, but you can't keep her out of the pool! She still teaches many of the late afternoon and evening classes.
Susie would be lost without the tremendous help from her sister-in-law-friend, Cornelia Truby, who has been with her many years. Not only is Cornelia a wonderful swimming teacher, she also runs the registration, among so many other things. So, combined with the expert attention of Susie, Ann-Sofi, Cornelia, some of her other children and staff, the children have great fun and they become comfortable with the water and most important, they become pool safe.
